What are the different types of SSL Certificates and what are they used for?
Domain Validated SSL Certificates
Domain validated certificates are the most commonly issued SSL certificates on the Internet and are usually issued instantly. They require a basic level of verification that usually involves proving domain ownership through a number of options.
They are suitable for E-commerce websites, secure payment pages, web-applications, mail-servers, and Intranets/Extranets.
Organization Validated SSL certificates (OV SSL)
Organization Validated SSL certificates deliver a high level of security by validating the organization behind the domain. These SSL certificates required verification of the organization’s identity and domain ownership.
The organization must prove its legal existence and operational status by providing business registration documents and verifying domain ownershiphttps://www.digicert.com/difference-between-dv-ov-and-ev-ssl-certificateshttps://www.ssldragon.com/blog/what-is-ov-ssl-certificate/.
Extended Validated SSL Certificates (EV SSL)
EV SSLs provides the highest level of security and trust. It requires a rigorous validation process to confirm the legal, physical, and operational existence of the entity requesting the certificate.
To qualify, the organization must undergo extensive vetting, including verifying the legal existence, operational status, and physical location. This process involves providing business documents and passing a thorough identity checkhttps://www.digicert.com/faq/public-trust-and-certificates/what-is-an-extended-validation-ev-ssl-certificatehttps://www.ssldragon.com/blog/what-is-ev-ssl/.
Code Signing Certificates
Code signing certificates are used by software developers to digitally sign their code and software. They ensures that the code has not been altered or tampered with since it was signed.
Developers must submit a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) and undergo identity verification by a Certificate Authority (CA). This includes providing business documents and, in some cases, using a Hardware Security Module (HSM) for key storage

FAQ
What does the SSL configuration service for $50 cover?
After the SSL certificate is installed, HTTPS protocol will be enabled on your website. Your users will be able to access your web site using https:// instead of http://, and a green icon will be shown next to your website URL on the browser to verify that the website is secured and that all the traffic from your users’ browsers to your website will be encrypted.
We can also configure your website’s HTTP address (e.g. http://www.company.com) to be redirected to your HTTPS address (e.g. https://www.company.com) to ensure that all your users will only be able to access your website securely using HTTPS protocol, and not the traditional HTTP protocol.
The service doesn’t include any application-level troubleshooting for problems that arise as a result of enabling HTTPS on the web server. You are advised to work with your web application developers to ensure that your application can work on HTTPS protocol.
The service doesn’t include the process of purchasing the SSL certificate from the CA provider. You may purchase the SSL certificate from us, or from another CA provider.
Is there down time to install an SSL certificate?
There will be no downtime in installing the SSL certificate for your site.
What does an SSL certificate mean in terms of security?
By having your website secured using HTTPS protocol, traffic from your users’ browsers to your website will be encrypted, allowing information (including sensitive information) to be transmitted securely. This can avoid the risk on the traditional HTTP protocol where data between web servers and web browsers are sent in plain text, making it vulnerable to eavesdropping if the data can be intercepted by an attacker.
Does having an SSL certificate mean I won’t get hacked? If not, then what does the SSL certificate do?
Having an SSL certificate installed on your server is not a guarantee that it won’t be hacked. The SSL certificate and HTTPS protocol will ensure that traffic between your site and your web users are encrypted to minimise the risk of eavesdropping when the traffic is intercepted. It does not secure your web server on the server’s operating system (OS) and application level — you still need to harden your OS, regularly patch your OS and application to ensure the security of your site on the server and application level.
How often will I have to renew my SSL certificate?
RapidSSL and RapidSSL Wildcard are renewed annually. You can purchase and renew your SSL certificate for multiple years, and 1 year is the minimum. When your SSL certificate nears its expire date, you would need to purchase a new SSL certificate as a replacement, and you can engage our SSL certificate installation service again if you would like to get our assistance to install the SSL certificate for you.
The SSL installation service is a one-time service per installation.
What else do I need to take note of?
You will need to generate the CSR before you can submit the order for the RapidSSL certificate. After the certificate is issued, you will need to install it on your server.
If you are unfamiliar with your web server’s environment, we do provide this as an add-on service known as System Admin – SSL Generation/Installation Service. If you need us to do both, we will need root access to your server. If you only need us to install the SSL certificate, we would need you to provide the private keys information for us to install the SSL certificate once it is issued.
