Differences between VPS and Dedicated Servers, Cloud Servers
What is the difference between Virtual Private Servers (VPS), Dedicated Servers and SimplerCloud’s Cloud Servers?
There are key differences between virtual private servers (VPS), dedicated servers and SimplerCloud’s cloud servers or cloud hosting.
If you’re looking for a virtual private server (VPS), you may want to know what the differences between virtual private servers and our cloud servers or cloud hosting. Although virtual private servers and cloud servers or cloud hosting seem similar, SimplerCloud’s cloud servers are full Virtual Machines (VMs) or Instances, loading your OS of choice and application framework instantly, whereas a Virtual Private Servers (VPS) is typically an account on one machine that is multiplexed into multiple server accounts. These accounts share the same machine OS, kernel and physical storage space. So, you can select a SimplerCloud Servelet, and add a Windows 2008 License (with MS SQL), or choose a Linux OS with mysql instead. A virtual private server is provisioned with fixed resources and OS.
Virtual Private Servers (VPS) | SimplerCloud’s Cloud Servers |
---|---|
1) Shared Kernel | Dedicated Kernel |
2) Local Storage or Network Attached Storage (NAS) | Centralized storage (We use Ceph) for significantly increased redundancy |
3) Upgrades or downgrades usually require physical downtime or sales assistance. | Upgrades or downgrades are automatically performed on-the-fly when you submit your order. |
4) Physical downtime in the event of hardware failure | High-availability failover in the event of physical node failure. A new Servelet launches with your server content. |
What about Dedicated Servers and SimplerCloud’s Cloud Servers?
Dedicated servers typically refer to physical, hosted servers with pre-selected resources (RAM, CPU and storage space) that you lease from a provider. Unlike cloud servers, dedicated servers and VPS usually require physical upgrades of hardware resources and do not have as high levels of redundancy when it comes to physical failure.
